Abstract

This article has the main objective to discuss the way in which public emergency of the Zapatista movement, in 1994, and its claim for respect for diversity contributed to the debate on multiculturalism and interculturalism as two concepts that refer to new forms social coexistence and relationship between state and society (especially indigenous peoples) with an emphasis on respect for difference. The discussion points to the need to distinguish between multiculturalism, as simple recognition of multiculturalism and interculturalism as a permanent dialogue between indigenous peoples and between them and the state. This will be in a position to advance the discussion on the possibilities of democracy as a form of government and a way of life.
