Abstract

This article compares the military experiences in Chiapas and Guatemala during the first half of the nineteenth century with the objective of investigating the social dimensions of militarization and its weight on memory and historiography. With the shared heritage of a majority indigenous population and the citizenship projects that segregated them, my inquiry into the exercise of war provides another way to understand the political and social history of these territories.
