Abstract

This article analyzes the emergence of TeleSUR, as well as the advantages and limits it faces to become a point of informative reference for Latin America. TeleSUR is a government-owned media network running against well-organized private corporations that dominate the media sphere. TeleSUR has been highly critical of the globalizing process, neoliberal economics and the role of the U. S. in the region. In addition, it supports regional integration, and has set a major goal for itself: to compete with massive transnational telecommunication corporations, and to become a media-base for Latin America.
