Abstract

In this article we explore the concept of “emotional communities” coined by the Colombian anthropologist, Myriam Jimeno, applying it to violence currently taking place in Mexico. Taking as a starting point the ethnography of a public event that took place in the “clandestine” cemeteries in Tetelcingo, Morelos, we reflect upon the concept’s potentials and limitations. We suggest that certain public events can become breeding grounds for emotional communities, and we propose the importance of including emotional dimensions to enrich academic research.

Maestra y Doctora en Estudios Latinoamericanos por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Desde agosto de 2012 es profesora-investigadora de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM); trabaja en el posgrado en Ciencias Sociales en Cuautla. Es parte del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (a partir de 2018 SNI II). También tiene una trayectoria trabajando en la cooperación internacional y como consultora internacional independiente.
