Towards the incorporation of the citizens in the Mexican media: going beyond the electoral participation

Abstract

The article reflects on the importance and centrality that has the electoral participation compared to other forms, particularly the inclusion of citizens in the democratization of “traditional” media. It offers a theoretical perspective about public space and communication space, where it is feasible to push for more civic media. The text presents an account of the instances ciudadanizadas (CNDH, IFE, IFAI) and participatory experiences arising from urban development planning. Proposed scales and levels of involvement of citizens from the query-evaluation, participation and the citizenship, contemplating the implementation of channels, figures and specific mechanisms.

Author Biography

Alberto Carrera Portugal, Universidad Iberoamericana.

Doctor in Political and Social Sciences, focusing on communication by the UNAM; Master in Communications from  Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City campus, and graduate in Science Communication at the Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, UNAM. He completed a specialization in Town and Territory at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Currently he teaches courses at the Research and Theories of Communication Department of the Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City campus.
It also collaborates on research projects in the area of the Estudios Urbanos y Regionales del Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales de la UNAM. Has served as secretary of the Executive Committee 2011-2013 of the Asociación Mexicana de Investigadores de la Comunicación (AMIC). albertocp5@hotmail.com
