Abstract

This article identifies and discusses three models that address the relationship between institutions and processes of innovation, discernible from different coordination factors: techno-economic, socio-technical and of national political economy. Despite its specificity, the three models are based on an inaccurate and incomplete definition of institutions and assume that they determine, ultimately, development, technical change and inequality schemes. The article reviews the theoretical implications and for empirical research that come as a result of linking all these processes (including the state ́s role) and concludes arguing about the relevance of new inter-disciplinary and more sophisticated explanatory schemes as an alternative to the knowledge that has been built in this area.
