Patenting, trajectory and characteristics of automotive batteries: the case of hybrid cars

Abstract
The main objective of this article is to describe and analyze the trajectory and characteristics of patents from automotive batteries for hybrid cars, from 1998 to 2013 and mention which companies are leaders in their manufacture. Similarly, the paper focuses on knowing what technologies are emerging and strengthening in this industry. Some of the questions that derive from the main objective of this paper, according to their level of importance are as follows: What is the evolution that the patents from automotive batteries have kept in the last 15 years? What periods can be identified during this trajectory? What are nowadays the main types of active components for batteries that are being explored? And, what are the leading companies in the patenting of active components for automotive batteries?
