Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this article is to identify the prevalence of dental fluorosis and associated factors in students of communities of Guanajuato supplied by water that exceeds the optimal concentration of fluoride. A cross-sectional study including middle and high school students was performed. Trough a structured questionnaire, data such as age, sex, mothers’ educational level, type of water consumed and the use of toothpaste was gathered. The presence and severity of dental fluorosis ( DF ) and the experience of caries was assessed. Weight, height and body fat percentage were also recorded. Four hundred and two subjects with a mean age of 15.7 (±3.1) years, 56.7% female, were included. The mean DMFT was 1.8 (±2.5) Decayed 1.4 (+2.0), Missing 0.03 (±0.2) and Filled 0.42 (±1.4). Fluorosis prevalence was 93%, 51.7% ≥TF6. Association between the type of water consumed and the presence of DF was observed. Mother educational level was a protective factor (OR= 0.842) for the presence of severe fluorosis. As a conclusion, a high prevalence of dental fluorosis was observed, most of the cases moderate or severe, which highlights the importance of implementing strategies to reduce this prevalence in these communities in future generations.
