Abstract

There is lack of knowledge of the work of the psychologist by the medical professional as a facilitator in the emergency area, which hinders the opening of work areas and restricts the potential benefits of their participation in the team. Purpose and objective of the study. Identify and describe the psychological care needs in the emergency department with the application of a semi-structured interview to detect psychological risk factors related to the complaint. Method. We applied a semi structured interview incidental randomly to patients attending the emergency department of Atizapán General Hospital. Who were interviewed agreed to participate in the study. Were identified and categorized the main psychological problems encountered. Statistical analysis was performed with contingency tables by X2. Results. The sample included 88 patients 38 men and 50 women the average age was 38.67 ± 17.56. The 46.6% of participants attended service for acute illness, 21.6% for acute chronic illness, 18.2% for accident or injury and 9.1% for attempted suicide. In 35 participants identified various psychological problems associated with the disease as deficits in adherence to treatment, lack of self-care behaviors, and difficulty in solving problems and low perceived self-efficacy, 11 cases presented anxiety and 6 participants attended hospital for drug addiction. Of the patients interviewed only 13 (14.3%) were referred by emergency medical personnel were found statistically significant differences by type of psychological problem and the number of patients referred to counseling, being most of the cases of those who attempt suicide entered in this item. Discussion. Psychological factors are associated in the process of care and treatment of patients in the emergency department. We discuss the benefits of counseling in different medical problems outlined in the service.
