Abstract

This paper has as objectives: To study the psychometric properties of the TAS-20 and its relationship with social desirability (measured by the MMPI scale L). The sample was constituted by 381 university students. The TAS-20 items presented a structure of three factors by factor analysis: Difficulty Expressing Feelings (2, 4, 11, 12, and 17), Difficulty Identifying Feelings (1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14) and Externally Oriented Thinking (5, 8, 10, 15, 16, 18, 19 and 20). The confirmatory factor analysis by the GLS-ML method, using the correlations matrix, indicates good adjustment of the three related factors structure (RMS SR = .053, RMS EA = .041, PGI = .949, APGI = .935, GFI = .923 and AGFI = .903). The scale was consistent (α=0.82) and reliable to the 6 months (r=0.71) as well as its first two factors (α=0.80 and r=0.55 and α=0.78 and r=0.61, respectively). The reliability of the third factor was low (α=0.53 and r=0.36). The scale distribution was adjusted to a normal curve, although its factors were positive skewness. The relationship of the scale with social desirability was significant (- 0.28). The TAS-20 possesses good psychometric properties.
