Abstract

Marijuana legalization in Mexico has caused highly intense debates. The complexity of the phenomenon deserves a detailed exposition of pros and cons of legalizing a third addictive substance besides alcohol and tobacco. Among the most relevant pros are the acquisition of control over production, quality and commercialization of marijuana, and the possibility of increasing epidemiologic and scientific knowledge for better prevention of addiction and search for medicinal uses of cannabis through clinical trials. The cons include the health risks that users experiment and the potential harmful power that cannabis consumption brings if driving under its effects with impairment of motor skills, as well as emotional changes like aggressiveness and behavioral modifications. Regardless of the consensus about legalization it is important to conduct the discussion without prejudices.

Sofía Hernández González, Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía

Licenciada en Psicología. Participa en adiestramiento tutorial en Neuropsicología en la Unidad de Cognición y Conducta del Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía, además es becaria del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Sus líneas de investigación son: adicciones y enfermedades neurogenenerativas, neurológicas y neuropsiquiátricas.

Julio Sotelo Morales, Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía

Investigador emérito de la Secretaría de Salud, ex director del Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía en donde actualmente es Jefe de Unidad de Neuroinmunología. Recibió en el año 2001 el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes. Asimismo recibió la condecoración Eduardo Liceaga, máximo galardón de la Medicina en México. Miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores, nivel III. Sus líneas de investigación son: adicciones, neurología clínica, enfermedades autoinmunes, esclerosis múltiple, neurocisticercosis, tumores cerebrales, epilepsia y enfermedades neurodegenerativas.
