Creation, Conversion, Facilitation and Knowledge Spaces: contributions of Ikujiro Nonaka to organizational theory

Abstract

This article aims to outline, synthesize and analyze Nonaka ́s perspective on practical wisdom, facilitator spaces and knowledge creators as part of his Organizational Theory. Multiple documents written by Nonaka in colaboration with several co-authors in specialized journals have been reviewed for this article. The paper also considers documents published by the author in the nineties, as well as the latest proposals and analytical categories that the author has incorporated to the management of knowledge. The inquiries guiding this work are the following: Why is it important to distinguish between tacit and explicit knowledge and what factors favor such conversion? What makes it so necessary to consider practical wisdom and spaces of knowledge as key elements of Nonaka ́s proporsal? And, how different is Nonaka ́s proposal from Traditional Theories of Organization and what are the main contributions of this author to the Theory of Organizational Knowledge?
