Abstract

According to specialized literature, environmental and market regulation plays a key role in advancing environmental innovation. While from a regulation perspective, the application of policy instruments leads to environmental innovation; from a market point of view, environmental management systems - such as ISO 14001- create a proactive environmental protection. However, both perspectives have followed parallel paths and an application in the environmental activities of the automotive sector in Mexico has so far been absent. This paper presents empirical evidence to start filling this gap. The article aims at showing the role that regulation and market play in advancing environmental innovation actions in the automotive sector, both at the level of manufacturing organizational practices and that of the design of cars that are produced and sold in Mexico. The research findings are based on interviews with manufacturing/environmental managers carried out during 2008-2009 and on the development of technological and environmental maps of the top vehicles produced and sold in Mexico from 2010 to 2015.
