Abstract

Evidence from several laboratories for the influence of pavlovian learning in the development of drug tolerance and addiction is presented. Since decade of 70s of last century, Shepard Siegel suggested that tolerance is partially due to the stimuli associated to drug administrations and these stimuli elicit a compensatory CR, and this response attenuates the effects of the drug. According to this view it was proposed that extinction process of the compensatory CR is an essential factor for rehabilitation of drug consumers. This possibility, however, has not been explored sufficiently.
