Abstract

The relationship between the Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) as a predictor of smoking behavior is assessed. A sample of anxiety and depressive subjects were compared with normal subject on basis of their scores in a battery of scales (ASI-3, MHQ, PANAS and WISDM-68). The first statistical analysis did not show differences among scores with exception of the ASI-3 among diagnosis groups. The second analysis showed that from all the correlations computed, the ones of items 7 and 8 from the MHQ with the scores of the subscales physical and social concerns of the ASI-3, showed a larger theoretical importance in the study. A third analysis showed the AS as a significant variable regarding the prediction of smoking behavior and AS; items 7 and 8 of the MHQ were identified as the must important in such analysis. It can be concluded that the AS is a significant variable in the prediction of smoking behavior in two specific moments; the first time the persons smokes and when smoking behavior becomes an everyday practice.
