Abstract

A study of the influence of ICT applications on teaching and learning in the sciences has been carried out, particularly in the case of learning chemistry. A virtual periodic table and a multimedia application have been used to explain one of the most difficult chemical concepts to understand by students, such as oxidation-reduction reactions (named as redox reactions). Firstly, the most important properties of the elements have been studied by students using a virtual periodic table. Secondly, students have used a multimedia application to follow the redox reaction that shows how the redox process occurs at the microscopic / atomic level. The results showed that students prefer virtual tools to conventional classes and that, in addition, the use of ICT offers a better performance than the classical theoretical explanation of the teacher. In particular, 62% of students considered that they preferred the study of the redox process through ICT tools and the 62.5% considered ICTs to be beneficial for classes and 59% agreed that ICT is more effective than the traditional class.
