Use of neural-derived peptides as therapy for spinal cord injury: an overview
Main Article Content
Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a phenomenon that damages the central nervous system (SNC) causing the loss of physiological activity beneath the injured area. Currently, no effective treatment exists against SCI in the clinical field. The role of the immune system through protective autoimmunity (PA) -a physiological phenomenon developed after SCI-could be of great relevance to induce neuroprotection. PA can be stimulated by using neural-derived peptides (NDP), obtained from neural constituents like myelin basic protein.
This article attempts to provide an overview of this innovative therapeutic strategy, which offers benefits and an encouraging future. The most relevant basic principles, mechanisms and preclinical outcomes using the NDP a91 will be revealed. Finally, clinical obstacles to surpass will be stated.
