Edible plants from an indigenous community in Huasteca Potosina, San Luis Potosí

Abstract
Mexico is rich in traditional knowledge; this knowledge is reflected in their culture. The use of edible plants continues to be a current practice and its importance can be seen in many traditional markets. Local edible plants are an alternative source in the diets of indigenous and rural populations; these plants form part of indigenous biodiversity and are an important source of plant genetic resources. Moreover, the intake of such varied diet has health benefits for the population who consumes it. This study aims at identifying local food plants of an indigenous community classified as highly marginalized. A variety of local edible species that contribute to the diet of the community were found; 54 species belonging to 46 genera and 31 families were recorded. These plants have the qualities of being accessible to the population and have adapted to the local environment.
