Abstract

The aim of this research was to identify possible evidence of linguistic development in the use of discourse connectors when comparing argumentative speech of two groups of adolescents from different educational backgrounds and age ranges (students from 8th grade, average age: 15;0, and High School seniors, average age: 18;3). Students were modeled a controversial imaginary situation linked to their school context as an Argumentative sample.

Data were analyzed through statistics and through qualitative analysis. We discovered quantitative differences in the use and diversity of connectors related to the type of speech. We also found qualitative differences in the establishment of the accurate use of some connectors related to age and school grade. Therefore, we can assert that there is a relationship that can be established between the use of some discourse connectors and the late stages of linguistic development.
