Abstract

This paper aims, in the first place, to analyze the meaning of the concept of Anthropocene from the perspective of the interactions of Science, Technology, Society and Environment (STSE), considering the debates that its introduction has generated in the scientific community and addressing the misunderstandings its presence in the media is giving rise to. Next, it addresses the role that chemical industrial activity has played, and continues to play, in the creation of the current planetary emergency, as well as what its main contributions to the new and vigorous sustainability science have been, in order to overcome the global crisis, advance in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals for the necessary transition to sustainability. The last part is devoted to the attention that chemical education has paid and should pay to these problems as a key aim in the training of citizens and future scientists and educators.
