Inclusion of Sustainable Chemistry in the Curriculum of Education Programs with a Chemical Profile: A Necessary Reflection

Abstract

Sustainable chemistry is increasingly necessary to minimize anthropogenic impacts on the environment and should be understood as a field that goes beyond environmental chemistry. In this context, this empirical analysis aims to substantiate the need to incorporate sustainable chemistry content into teacher education, since teachers are responsible for the initial teaching of chemistry at the lower secondary, upper secondary and technical secondary levels in Cuba, with potential applicability to countries with similar educational systems. The study includes an analysis of sustainable chemistry concepts, its twelve principles and selected industrial processes in which these principles are applied. It also examines the curricula of chemistry-related degree programs at the University of Oriente, as well as existing postgraduate programs in sustainable chemistry at internationally recognized universities. Based on this analysis, elective courses are proposed for programs with a chemical-pedagogical profile, such as Chemistry Education and Industrial Chemistry Education, and, as a complementary option, the inclusion of sustainable chemistry content in related courses.
